The Byzantine church: a foretaste of Paradise
The rituals of the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the architectural design and decoration of the church buildings offered the Byzantines a foretaste of Paradise. Moreover, Byzantine churches were frequently built in pleasant enclosed gardens that were an allusion to Paradise. The connection between church and Paradise is often reflected in Byzantine literature.
